How collectors evaluate emerging contemporary artists.

First bids in a new category feel like guesswork — until you know which signals actually predict an artist's staying power. Here is the checklist our specialists use.

Soft fluid abstract painting in pink and blue

Start with studio consistency

A strong emerging artist makes coherent bodies of work, not one-off experiments. Look for a recognisable language across at least two years of output: repeated motifs, a committed palette, a medium they keep returning to. Consistency signals a practice, not a phase.

Then check the paper trail

Exhibitions, residencies, and critical writing matter more than follower counts. A group show at a respected regional gallery outweighs a viral post. Ask for the CV the way you would ask for provenance — because for living artists, it is provenance.

“Collect the practice, not the piece. A coherent studio history beats a single striking image every time.”

Watch the secondary market — carefully

A few early resales at or above estimate suggest real demand; a flood of flips suggests speculation. Our timed emerging-artist sales publish full bid histories, so you can see which is which before you raise a paddle.
